Located right on the Alberta border, this town is mostly a gateway to the great Wood Buffalo National Park. Fort Smith was the capital of the territory until 1967, and is still the headquarters for several government offices.

Check out Fort Fitzgerald, the first trading post established by the Hudson's Bay Company, but now abandoned. The incredible Northern Life Museum should definitely not be missed, with Indian artifacts, pioneer tools, crafts, dinosaur bones, mammoth tusks, paintings and manuscripts, which all describe the northern way of life. This museum is also home to a fascinating exhibition on bison.
