Inuvik is the first community north of the Arctic Circle equipped with all the sanitation facilities of a modern town. In the 1970s, Inuvik experienced an economic boom when oil and natural gas were discovered in the Mackenzie Delta. This is the transportation hub of the Arctic Coast, and a popular tourist destination.

Be sure to check out the famous igloo-shaped church, the Church of our Lady of Victory, located downtown. The Jak park (meaning berries) observation tower, located in Jak Territorial Park, offers amazing views of the surrounding scenery. In the spring/summer, Inuvik is the location of a Sunrise Festival, where the sun's appearance is honoured after months of winter hiding!
