A visit to the Northwest Territories would not be complete without a visit to Nahanni National Park Reserve, the first national park in the world to be designated a national site of universal importance by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This wonder of nature is accessible only by air, or by canoe for the adventurous types from Nahanni Butte.

The most popular activity by far here is kayaking or rafting, however be warned: only experienced rafters should brave these dangerous waters alone. Tour guides are available for canoe trips, and can be especially helpful in directing you towards wildlife, as they know where the animals can be found. Keep your eyes peeled for 13 species of fish, 120 species of birds, 40 types of animals, and 750 plant species.

The park includes Canada's deepest canyons; in fact, there are four 'great' canyons, as well as the Rabbitkettle and Wildmint hot springs. Perhaps the most spectacular sight is the 90 m (295 ft) Virginia Falls, which plummet into the Nahanni River. The falls are twice the height of Niagara Falls, and the surrounding cliffs are taller than the CN tower! This is a wonder of nature that must be seen to be believed.
