The community of Norman Wells was an oil well until quite recently in 1996 when it was closed down. In the second World War, Norman Wells provided US Alaskan troops with a strategic location to get oil for their ships and aircrafts. A pipeline was built through the Mackenzie Mountains (a project known as the 'Canol Project'), but was only partially completed when the war ended. Norman Wells is the only community with daily jet air service from Edmonton and Yellowknife.
